The Great Deception
Matthew 7:22-23 presents a sobering reality: many will approach me on that day, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, cast out demons, and perform numerous miracles?’ Yet, I will respond to them directly, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you workers of iniquity!’
This passage serves as a stark reminder against self-deception. Merely uttering the name of Jesus is insufficient for entry into the kingdom of heaven; genuine faith demands that our actions and way of life reflect God’s will. Those who publicly profess their faith yet live in contradiction to it will face rejection from Jesus on Judgment Day, regardless of their claims of performing miracles in His name. We must ponder two critical questions: who are these unfortunate souls, and how can they perform miracles if not through God’s power? The text reveals several truths about them.
Firstly, they are numerous, as many are on the broad path leading to eternal destruction, in contrast to the few who have discovered the narrow road to eternal life.
Secondly, they identify themselves as followers of Christ. They are not adherents of other religions or non-believers; they openly declare, “I am a Christian.” They engage in works, prayers, and healings in Jesus’ name, and they establish large churches and ministries under His banner. They profess a relationship with Him, yet they are not truly His. Instead of commending their actions, He will disown them, rejecting every deed and word. He “never” knew them, nor did they genuinely know Him. They were not Christians who fell from grace; they were never part of God’s chosen ones, selected before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4), sanctified by the Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:21), and justified through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). Those whom Christ casts away with stern words of condemnation are labeled as workers of iniquity.
Not everyone who professes to teach or represent the Lord does so with true sincerity. This statement serves as a crucial reminder that appearances can be deceiving, and not all who claim to speak on behalf of God genuinely embody His teachings or intentions. In a world filled with diverse voices and interpretations of faith, it becomes increasingly important to approach spiritual guidance with a discerning heart and mind.
